Tory Christie is an earth scientist and the author of several books on science and nature. Her middle-grade novel, A Touch of Blue, is a story of friendship and sacrifice told through the vivid lens of nature and 1970s film photography.

Growing up, I loved chasing through wooded trails, swimming in the lake, climbing trees, and collecting every shiny rock I could find. But for today’s kids there are screens, scheduled activities, and constant distractions to take the place of outdoor play. So, I wanted to explore a way to connect kids with nature through a story.

The benefits of outdoor play have long been acknowledged, but recent scientific research has shed new light on how crucial outdoor experiences are for kid’s development, mental well-being, and creative abilities. Yes, physical activities like climbing trees and running barefoot on grass enhance balance, coordination, and overall fitness. But time spent in a natural environment also sparks unstructured play, problem-solving abilities, creativity, and confidence.

And nature is not just for kids. Connecting with nature can benefit everyone’s mental health, offering an escape from the pressures of daily life, providing respite from screens and the bustle of activities. Time spent outdoors can decrease cortisol levels and nurture a sense of calm.

In terms of creativity, there is so much stimuli in the wild! Intricate patterns in a maple leaf, an unexpected encounter with a chipmunk, or the challenge of building a fort with sticks can stimulate the senses. Nature’s canvas becomes the perfect backdrop for children to express their creativity, novel ideas, and innovative thinking.

Time spent in nature is what inspired me to become a scientist studying these natural landscapes and is what inspired me to write books for kids. I want my stories about science and nature to encourage kids to have these experiences, too. In this modern age, where technology offers unparalleled convenience, I wanted to share a story that was fast paced, exciting, and full of all the wonders of the natural world.
